History

Fuengirola over the years

Fuengirola was originally founded by the Phoenicians and has subsequently been owned by, among others, Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Moors, so that many influences have left their marks. In the  foothills of the mountain range behind the city to the south, remains of an early Phoenician settlement were found. Later, this site was occupied by the Romans and the area included a city known in ancient times as Suel.

In 1485 Fuengirola officially became part of the Crown of Castile through the capture of the castle. Because of its location, it was often attacked by pirates, which at one point made it a depopulated area where people only went to guard the coast and defend themselves.

In May 1841 Fuengirola was administratively detached from Mijas. At that time, residents were mainly employed in fishing and agricuture.

In 1984, a series of architectural elements of a Roman temple were discovered in Los Boliches. These parts, probably from the Mijas quarry, have been rebuilt and can be admired on the Los Boliches boulevard.

From the sixties of the last century Fuengirola has slowly grown into the tourist destination it is today.

Sohail Castle

The castle was built by adb-ar-Rahman III in the mid-10th century. The city of Suel was no longer nemad as sush from the beginning of the Middle Ages, the name Suel was later changed to Suhayl which also became the name of the castle and its surroundings.

Writher and scholar Al-Suhayli ( 1114-1185 ) lived there for quite some time and later became known as one of the seven saints of Marrakesh, where he was buried.

In the early Middle Ages, the city was set on fire and its inhabitants fled to Mijas. Of Suhayl, only the fort remained, and according to historian Alonso de Palencia, the town of Font-Jirola developed at the foot of the castle.

In 1485, the settlement, along with the rest of the kingdom of Granada, fell into the hands of the Christian Monarchs. An attempt to repopulate the site with 30 people failed, and in 1511 the city was registered as uninhabited, except fot the fortress and a watchtower. Land originally reserved fot Fuengirola was assigned to Mijas.

In the 17th century, after the threat of the Turkish and Moroccan pirates disappeared, azn new urban settlement developed.

Fuengirolaa Battle

This battle took place in the area during the Spanish War of Independence. On October 15th, 1810, a small army of about 200 men from the Polish Duchy of Warsaw defeated a mixed British-Spanish army of 3,000 soldiers under the command of Lord Blayney.
